The Nanganallur Skill Advancement Initiative (NANSAI), a free tailoring training centre for women who are underprivileged, is making strong and steady progress.
Nanganallur Speaks had already covered earlier in its edition that the institute was started on August 21, 2025. It continues to be a very welcoming and meaningful initiative by Mr. R. Balasubramanian, founder of Mangaldeepam, and Mr. Bibhudatta Panda, founder of the NGO Let’s Feed the Needy.
This free training aims to empower women with valuable livelihood skills, especially those who cannot afford paid courses.
NANSAI began with 25 women in its first batch. Today, 22 women continue in the course, while three had to discontinue due to work and personal needs.
The free classes take place every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm.
Since its inauguration, the unit has completed 37 detailed training sessions till November 30. The centre currently has four new sewing machines and plans to add more.
The 6 months course focuses mainly on practical learning, handled by an experienced and kind trainer.
The women have already learnt to stitch shorts, frocks, paavadai and sattai. Each participant has stitched many pieces and shares their designs proudly in the unit’s WhatsApp group.
The co-founders also share these creations on social media to encourage their growth. The next level of training — stitching churidhar — began December 2.
Mr. Panda and Mr. Balasubramanian personally oversee the centre’s activities. Mr. Balasubramanian shared that the women joined the free course with zero knowledge of tailoring and are now confidently stitching various garments.
He said this transformation is exactly what NANSAI stands for — skill development and self-confidence.
Mr. Panda added that they are very pleased with the progress and are planning to start the second batch soon.
The current batch will complete the course by end-February 2026. NANSAI will present certificates of completion in early March 2026.
