A ‘Ration Shop on Wheels’ was spotted last week on Ramnagar 7th Street, bringing essential supplies directly to the homes of senior citizens. The mobile service has been introduced to support elderly residents who find it difficult to visit the ration shop on their own.
When we spoke to the official in charge, she explained that the vehicle is sent once every month. “This is absolutely for senior citizens. We have a list of beneficiaries and we call them before we arrive. They can also reach us if they need anything,” she explained.
The initiative is part of Tamil Nadu government’s ‘Thaayumanavan Scheme’, launched by the Civil Supplies Department.
Under the scheme, essential commodities such as rice, sugar, wheat, palmolein oil, and toor dhal are provided through the Public Distribution System to senior citizens and persons with disabilities in Chennai and nine other districts.
Residents said the service has been a great relief for the elderly families with weaker economic conditions, as it ensures that they receive their monthly essentials without difficulty or additional expenses.
Overall, the Ration Shop on Wheels scheme has become a valuable support system, providing comfort and timely help to senior citizens and economically weaker families.
