Teachers and students of Nehru Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Nanganallur, celebrated the traditional Pongal festival in a grand and meaningful manner.
The celebrations were organised by following rural traditions, giving students a chance to experience Tamil culture closely. Beautiful colourful kolams were drawn, a pongal pot was kept, and sugarcane was decorated, adding special charm to the event.
Various traditional games such as uriyadi, tug of war, slow cycling and kabaddi were conducted for students. These games created great excitement and happiness among the students. Teachers also joined together to prepare sweet pongal and distributed it to the students with love.
With the efforts of social activist, Mr. Durairaj, and with the support of Dhanalakshmi Engineering College, tasty vegetarian biryani was served as lunch to all the students. This gesture was appreciated by everyone.
The chairman of 12th zone, Mr. N. Chandran, along with 167th ward Councillor, Mrs. Durga Devi Natarajan, ward secretary, Mr. Natarajan, police dignitaries and school principal, Mrs. Premalatha, participated.
Most students attended the celebration wearing traditional Pongal attire like dhoti and shirt, which added beauty to the occasion. To explain the importance of Pongal and agriculture, a cow along with calf was brought to the venue. This gave students a memorable and real-life understanding of our cultural heritage.
Overall, the Pongal celebration became a memorable event that helped students learn and respect Tamil traditions, while also strengthening unity and happiness within the school community.
A note from the school says on Monday, January 12, 2026, its NGC, NCC Naval and NCC Army, JRC, Scouts and teachers took out a rally to create awareness among the public to celebrate a smokeless Bhogi.
