On the occasion of May Day (May 1), Nanganallur Speaks
team went around the neighbourhood and interacted with
several hardworking people from different fields. The team
spoke to them about their work, their experiences, and their
message for this special day.
First the team met a mango-seller who shared that he came to
Chennai 17 years ago from his native place. He said compared
to regular jobs, this seasonal fruit business gives him better
benefits during the season. With a smile, he conveyed his May
Day wishes to everyone.
Next, came a banana leaf-seller, Mr. Kalaiselvan, who has
been in this field for 25 years. Originally from Cuddalore, he
said there was always a steady demand for banana leaves,
especially from hotels. He regularly supplies to many hotels
and expressed his happiness in continuing this traditional work.
He also extended his warm May Day wishes.
At 10th Street, near Raghavendra Arch, Mr. Kannayiram, a
sugarcane juice vendor, said he has been running this business
for more than 40 years. He proudly shared that his shop serves
fresh sugarcane juice throughout the year, not just during the
summer season. He, too, greeted everyone on May Day.
Painters were working at a construction site on 2nd Main Road.
Mr. Anand, one of the painters, said he has been in this field for
the past 10 years. He mentioned that the more effort they put
in, the more they earn, and hard work always pays. He wished
all fellow workers a Happy May Day.
Zepto delivery executive, Mr. Akbar, who has been doing this
job for the past 5 months, shared that in this line of work, there
is no fixed leave policy — workers can choose when to take a
break. He also mentioned that earnings depend on how much
one works, with no fixed limit. He said the job was going well for
him and conveyed his May Day wishes to everyone.
Another touching moment was when the team met an elderly
man with a tricycle. With a cheerful smile, he said staying active
and working hard keeps his body fit and strong. His positive
attitude was truly inspiring.
Through these interactions, one message stood clear —
without the dedication and hard work of these labourers, it is
not possible to build a strong society or nation. From daily wage
workers to small business vendors and professionals, everyone
plays an important role in society.
Let us all come together to respect and appreciate every
worker. Belated Happy May Day to all!
