A meeting was recently held at the Thillaiganga NagarAssociation office, where members of the Nanganallur SeniorCitizen Forum, Federation of Nanganallur Welfare Associationsand Thillaiganga Nagar Association gathered to meet thenewly-elected Alandur constituency MLA, Mr. M. Harish, as anintroductory and goodwill meeting.During the interaction, senior civic activist, Mr. V. Rama Rao,who is also the president of the Federation of Senior CitizensAssociations of Tamil Nadu (FOSCATAN), submitted arepresentation to the MLA on behalf of FOSCATAN.The letter, addressed to Chief Minister Vijay, with a copy to theMLA, requested the formation of a Tamil Nadu EldersCommission for the welfare and protection of senior citizens.The representation highlighted that Tamil Nadu has a rapidlygrowing elderly population and stressed the need for adedicated commission to safeguard the rights, dignity, welfareand safety of senior citizens. It also mentioned the importanceof addressing issues such as elder protection, healthcaresupport, welfare schemes, legal assistance and creating anage-friendly environment for elderly people.Mr. Rama Rao explained that the Tamil Nadu government hadearlier announced a State Policy for Senior Citizens and thatsenior citizens’ organisations have been continuouslyrequesting the implementation of an Elders Commission tosupport elderly citizens across the state.The MLA received the representation and interacted warmlywith the members at the meeting.
