On the occasion of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June
15, HelpAge India organised a special event at the book
release hall of the Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram,
Chennai, where the national report, ‘Climate Resilient Ageing –
Ensuring Care, Dignity & Agency’, was officially launched.
The event was attended by Dr. Nirmala Balagopal, former
principal secretary, Tamil Nadu, Mr. V. Rama Rao, president,
FOSCATN, Dr. G. Dhinagaran, Asst Prof., Centre for
Environmental Studies, Anna University, S. Senthoor Pari,
president, Exnora International, Dr. P.P. Ramasamy, former
dean, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, S. Edwin Babu
director, HelpAge India TN and Puducherry.
The gathering included various association representatives,
including members of the Nanganallur Senior Citizen Forum.
The report is based on a nationwide study covering 2,224
senior citizens across 20 districts in 10 states, including Tamil
Nadu. The findings revealed that 78% of older persons had
experienced at least one climate-related disaster such as
heatwaves, floods, or droughts during the last three years.
The study highlighted that elderly people living alone, widows,
those above 80 years of age, and persons with physical or
mental impairments face greater risks and challenges.
The report pointed out that climate change affects not only
health but also income, housing, caregiving and overall well-
being of senior citizens. Many elderly people continue to
depend on government welfare schemes, family support and
community assistance to cope with these challenges.
Speakers emphasised the need to include senior citizens in
climate adaptation and disaster management planning. They
also called for stronger healthcare services, social protection
measures and community support systems to ensure that older
persons can live with dignity, safety, and resilience.
HelpAge India officials noted that older persons possess
valuable knowledge, experience and traditional wisdom that
can help communities become more resilient to climate change.
The organisation urged governments, institutions, families and
communities to work together to protect and empower senior
citizens.
The event called for greater awareness, stronger support
networks and inclusive policies to ensure a secure and dignified
future for India’s ageing population.
