As the summer heat continues, seasonal fruits such as nungu
(ice apple), mangoes and jackfruit have arrived in large
quantities across the markets and streets of Nanganallur.
On 1st Main Road, from the petrol pump area towards Agarwal
Eye Hospital and the newly-opened Sundar Hospital, several
vendors are selling fresh nungu on the roadside.
Mr. Kanniyappan and Mr. Sathish, selling nungu near Agarwal
Eye Hospital, said they come from Madurantakam to sell the
popular summer fruit. They sell one nungu for Rs. 10, while
customers can get 12 pieces for Rs. 100.
Similarly, on 4th Main Road, near Vivek & Co., Mr. Sakthivel, a
street fruit vendor, is selling fresh jackfruit sourced from
Panruti, a place well-known for its jackfruit production. He said
that jackfruit is currently being sold at Rs. 300 per kg.
The neighbourhood markets are now filled with colourful
mangoes, refreshing nungu and sweet jackfruit, attracting many
residents. With schools currently closed for summer holidays,
families are enjoying these seasonal fruits at home.
“Summer fruits are the perfect choice during the vacation
season. Children enjoy them, and they also help us stay
refreshed in the hot weather,” said Mrs. Meenakshi, a resident
of Nanganallur.

Residents are also hoping for cooler weather in the coming
weeks as the Agni Nakshatram period has ended and schools
are expected to reopen soon.
