Big relief, say elders as govt joins AB-PMJAY

The Federation of Senior Citizen Associations of Tamil Nadu
has welcomed the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to join
the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-
PMJAY), describing it as a landmark initiative that will provide
quality healthcare support to senior citizens across the state.
The federation, under the leadership of its president, Mr. V.
Rama Rao, had submitted a representation to Tamil Nadu
Chief Minister, Mr. C. Joseph Vijay, on June 25, 2026,
requesting the state government to implement the Vaya
Vandana PMJAY health insurance scheme for all citizens aged
70 years and above.
In the memorandum, the federation pointed out that many
elderly citizens in Tamil Nadu were not covered under any
health insurance scheme and were forced to bear heavy
medical expenses during their old age.
It explained that the Central government had introduced the
PMJAY Vaya Vandana scheme, offering health insurance
coverage of up to Rs. 5 lakh per year for senior citizens aged
70 and above, irrespective of their financial status.
The federation stressed that with nearly 1.5 crore senior
citizens being in Tamil Nadu, implementing the scheme would
bring significant relief to elderly people and their families by
reducing the financial burden of medical treatment.

The federation has expressed its appreciation to the Tamil
Nadu government for integrating the PMJAY with the state’s
Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme
(CMCHIS), making the benefits available to eligible
beneficiaries in Tamil Nadu.
Expressing gratitude, Mr. Rama Rao, thanked the Chief
Minister for taking this people-centric decision. He said the
move would provide much-needed financial security and
improved access to quality healthcare for lakhs of senior
citizens across the state.
The federation also appreciated the cooperation between the
Central and state governments in extending this important
healthcare benefit and urged all eligible senior citizens to enrol
and make use of the scheme.
