The sewage pipe replacement work on 1st Main Road,
Nanganallur, being carried out by Greater Chennai Corporation,
has progressed further this week. The stretch that was
previously under construction between Needs Supermarket,
HDFC Bank, and Bharath Hospital has now been completed
and reopened for traffic.
The work has now moved beyond Bharath Hospital towards the
Vanuvampet side. As part of the next phase, extensive digging
and pipe-laying activities are under way, resulting in a complete
closure of the road connecting Nanganallur and Vanuvampet.
Traffic movement in both directions has been blocked due to
the ongoing work.
A large quantity of excavated mud has been piled up along the
road, forming a mound-like barrier that has made vehicle
movement impossible on the affected stretch. As a result,
motorists are being diverted through alternative routes.
Residents and commuters travelling between Nanganallur and
Vanuvampet are currently advised to use Jawaharlal Nehru
Salai (100 Feet Road).
Vehicles can enter Nanganallur through Thillaiganga Nagar
from this main road and similarly exit through the same route to
reach other destinations. The diversion has increased travel
time for many commuters, especially during peak hours.
While the ongoing work has caused temporary inconvenience,
residents acknowledge that the project is aimed at upgrading
the sewage infrastructure and reducing future drainage-related
problems in the locality.
Many have expressed hope that the current phase will be
completed as quickly as possible so that normal traffic
movement can resume.
